What effects does the use of marijuana and amphetamine have on driving?

Marijuana impairs concentration, judgment, and the sensory and perceptual skills needed to drive. Amphetamines can keep a driver awake but make them less coordinated, edgy, and more crash-prone; a false sense of alertness is often followed by fatigue.

What is the penalty for being convicted of driving while intoxicated?

Adult first offense: fine up to $2,000, 72 hours to 180 days in jail, and a 90- to 365-day license suspension. Second: up to $4,000, 30 days to 1 year, 180 days to 2 years. Third: felony, up to $10,000, 2 to 10 years in TDCJ. DWI with a passenger under 15, intoxication assault, and intoxication manslaughter carry higher penalties. Legal intoxication is BAC 0.08 or loss of normal mental or physical faculties.

Zero tolerance: any detectable amount. First: Class C, fine up to $500, 20–40 hours community service, alcohol-awareness course, and a license suspension. Second: longer service. Third (17–20): Class B, possible jail, and a one-year suspension or 90 days with an interlock. Under 17 a third offense may go to juvenile court.
